In the spaghetti version of our Harmania Dress, we showed you a very quick but not so elegant method of binding the armholes while the front and the back of the dress are still separate. And then we asked you to sew the ends of the binding into the side seams when you sew those seams to join the front and back of the dress together.
Today we will show you how to bind those armholes in an elegant way. Let’s start shall we?
You will need:
- Harmania Spaghetti version pattern pieces
- Lots of pins
- Pencil or chalk
How to Bind Armholes of Harmania Dress
Step 1: Follow the sewing instructions up to Step 2 of the pattern tutorial.
Step 2: Next; instead of binding the armholes first as the pattern suggested, we are going to Skip to Step 8 of the pattern tutorial and sew the side seams of the dress first.
Note: If you are doing the godet version, make sure you STOP sewing at the side notches from the underarm. Then Follow Step 9 of the pattern tutorial to insert godets.
If not continue to step 3 below.
Step 3: You can go ahead now and hem your dress. You can do this by following Step 10 of the pattern tutorial.
Step 4: Preparing & Attaching the armhole binding, the elegant way.
a. Press one long side of the armhole binding down 1/4″ (0.6 cm) towards the wrong side of the fabric. Repeat for the other binding.
b. Open up before sewing. Take your binding and sew it into a loop, right side together, matching the short ends. Use 3/8″ (1 cm) seam allowance. Press seam open or grade them if necessary.
c. With the dress wrong side out, place the right side of the un-folded side of the binding on the wrong side of the armhole. Line up the edges and match up the side seams on the dress with the ones on the binding. Pin and sew with 1/4″ (0.6 cm) seam allowance. Note: DO NOT STRETCH WHILE DOING THIS!
d. Turn the dress right side out. Take the outer edge of the binding that is already folded and turn towards the right side of the dress. You will now cover the stitch you just made when attaching the binding to the wrong side of the dress. Pin. Top stitch using a twin needle as close to the edge as you can being careful not to stretch the binding. Press well.
You are done!
Now stand back and Enjoy your work!
