If you are here and reading this, it means you are looking for ways to learn how to make your own swimsuit and figure out how to add those elastics. In most swimsuits, the edges of the swimsuit are stabilized and finished with elastic so they can stay put while in water. The elastic is attached to the inside of the swimsuit and then folded over towards the lining and topstitched on the right side. You do not need fancy equipment to attach the elastic. It is actually super easy to do. Trust me this is my 7th bikini in 2 weeks!

First you need to find the right swimwear elastic. Lucky for you. I found some good ones here and they are very affordable and good. Second you will need swimsuit fabrics. I love Stoffenfeest collection. Also I have found a good ones here and cheap too. Third, you will need a sewing machine with zig-zag stitching with ball point needles. And finally our L&K Swimsuit pattern. You can grab a copy of the English version here or Dutch version here if not already. Please be sure to share your creations on IG or Facebook.  Use #sansashash #sansahashlk

How to Sew Elastic Into A Swimsuit

We are going to use the racerback version and the basic bikini bottoms to show you how but the method is the same for all versions.

Step 1:

Follow all the steps of the pattern tutorial for both the top and bottom and stop when it says sewing elastic to the top and bottoms. You will then cut the elastics in the corresponding sizes and secure all the elastic at each end using a wide zigzag stitch to make a loop.

Step 2:

Pin the elastic to the edges of the lining, evenly distributing elastic to the fabric. Use a wide zigzag stitch to attach the elastic to the fabric.

Step 3:

Turn the elastic toward the lining of the garment, and topstitch in place. You can use wide zigzag stitch or twin needle.

Note: The seam allowance is 3/8” (1 cm) for all elastic.
