I just love that extra detail of the exposed zipper on our Impala Skirt .  Would you like to know how to add one on your skirt?

Shall we begin?

TUTORIAL: How To Add An Exposed Zipper

Note: You will need our Impala Skirt pattern for this.

Let’s follow these steps!

Step 1: Transfer the zipper line marking to the front skirt piece B. Now cut through the zipper line. You will now have two parts of skirt piece B.

Note: You will need to use the layers feature when printing, so you can see all pattern piece markings clearly for your sizes only.

Step 2: Place your piece (s) B RS facing down.  Finish the bottoms with a method of your choice. Then, press 3/4” (2 cm) towards the WS of the garment. Flip your fabric so that the RS is facing up and topstitch in place.  You can use a wide zigzag stitch or twin needle. Finish both sides of the skirt piece B on the side seam using a serger or zig-zag stitch.

Step 3: Press the finished sides towards the WS using 3/8” (1 cm) seam allowance. Baste or pin in place.

Note: You might need to stabilize the fabric where the zipper will be placed. Recommended width for fusible interfacing is 1/2” (1.3 cm) plus the length of the piece.

Step 4: We are going to attach the zipper.

Take the pieces and flip them to the RS. Center the zipper underneath the opening, making sure the raw edges are align. Before sewing, make sure the zipper is closed and the zipper head is at the bottom end of the opening. Pin the zipper in place. Optional: Use double sided sewing tape to put the zipper in place so it won’t  move during sewing. Install a zipper foot on your machine. Starting at the top, sew down the sides of the zipper to the garment. If your zipper head is in the way, you may need to move it out of the way. Remove basting stitches and cut off extra zipper length.

TIP: For the top part of the zipper before the zipper head, simply fold under the raw edges to give a neat appearance.
