Welcome to Day 2 of Unisex Seronera Bomber Jacket Sew-Along. We will start by sewing welt pockets in the front.
I am a big fan of welt pockets. They are such an amazing finishing detail on every garment. Wouldn’t you agree?
Welt Pockets: Unisex Seronera Bomber Jacket Sew Along
So here’s what we’ll be doing today. Let’s get started!
Checklist:
- You will need your front pieces (make sure you already blended for CHEST, WAIST & LENGTH before cutting)
- Fusible interface
- Scissors
- Iron
- Pins
Do keep in mind that all seam allowances are 3/8” (1 cm) except where noted and are included in the pattern pieces. IMPORTANT: You will use a serger, stretch or wide zig zag stitch throughout.
NOTE: These instructions are for both the Sporty and Long version.
Transfer The Markings
Follow Step 1 of the pattern tutorial (English OR Dutch version) to transfer the markings for the welt pockets onto the right side of the front jackets.
TIP: I cut the rectangle piece off my pattern pieces and use chalk to trace the rectangle on the main fabric.
Create The Welts
Continue to follow Step 1 of the pattern tutorial to create the welts.
TIP: I used the welt pocket rectangle piece to get a perfect rectangle shape. How: Pin the rectangle piece right where the welt pocket placement is on the WS
of the pocket. Sew around the edges of the pattern piece. Remove the paper when you are done.
Clip into the middle of the pocket opening and create a “Y” shape into the corners. Make sure you clip all the way into the corners but not past the thread.
Flip the pocket into the inside of the main fabric and press.
Note: The curved side of the pocket must face the outside of the jacket, where the zipper will be placed and not towards the armhole.
To get a perfect press, press open the seams you just made. This will help the outside lay better. Looking good so far right?
To create the welts, use the notches as a guide to fold up the facing. This tutorial here will show you how.
Place the pocket lining on top of the main pocket with RS facing. Sew all around the edges. Go ahead and use your serger here if you prefer.
Yay! We did it!
Finishing Touch: On the RS of the garment, topstitch the welt pocket to get a professional look.
And the welt pockets are done! Feeling accomplished? You should, I know I did after this!
Tomorrow, we’re going to ADD SLEEVES TO OUR JACKET.
See you then.
