Adding binding to the flutter sleeveless unlined version – Tutorial

Hi there today let’s welcome our guest blogger Jessica Francis of Francis_fam_bam_x3. I really admire Jessica’s work and I was so excited to team up with her in bringing you this tutorial. Today Jessica will show you how to add binding to a flutter sleeveless unlined bodice using our  stylish Nilah Flutter Top & Dress pattern.

How neat is this?

Here goes;

You will need:

  • Neck binding piece from the Nilah pattern (Dutch version or English version). Note:When you are cutting out your pattern pieces, cut out two extra neck binding pieces (these will be longer than the armhole, this does not matter as we will trim them once they are attached.
  • Sew line glue (Optional)
  • Iron
  • pins or clips

Let’s begin.

Step 1:  Take your binding pieces and fold them in half WS together and press.

Note: I like to use sewline glue to keep it folded, and this also stops the fabric moving when it comes time to attach

Step 2: Follow Step 2 up to step 4 of the Nilah tutorial.

Step 3: Grab a folded binding piece and with the bodice RS up, pin the binding along the edge of the armhole. Be careful not to stretch the binding as you are pinning it (Don’t worry about any overhang, we will cut that off).

Sew and finish using an overlocker or zigzag stitch with a 1/4 seam allowance being careful not to stretch the fabric as you sew, trim any excess fabric. Press the seams towards the WS of the bodice.

Step 4: Go bank to Step 8 of the Nilah tutorial to sew the side seams.

Step 5: Once you have sewn your side seams you can top stitch around the armhole using either a stretch or zig zag stitch. If you do not wish to top stitch you will need to tack the side seams to the bodice, to do this you will press your side seam towards the back bodice and using a straight stitch sew several stitches down your side seam starting from the top of the armhole , don’t forget to reverse stitch to secure your stitches.

That’s it, you can now finish the rest of your dress/top following the Nilah instructions.
